SUMMARY:Adopt a Granny - Craft and Bingo!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our first Adopt-A-Granny event of the season at the St. Miklos School and Orphanage. This activity brings together special children from the orphanage and their adoptive grandparents from seniors’ homes we support. It is one of our most heartwarming and rewarding charity activities. If the weather permits\, we will play some outdoor games in the schoolyard and then have a game of Bingo with prizes provided by NAWA. It will be a fun event\, and you don’t need to speak Hungarian to engage with the participants and help them play and win. So\, don’t be shy\, come and join us! The orphanage staff is also working on building a pinata for the children to smash at the end of the games. You can bring these items to the upcoming October general meeting\, where they will be collected by a representative of the Salvation Army. In Budapest\, the Salvation Army runs halfway houses for both men and women\, as well as for mothers with children from abused homes. DESCRIPTION:We will be visiting the classic Gerbeaud Cukrászda. The coffeehouse has a rich history of over 150 years. During the 19th century\, Budapest was home to a thriving coffee house culture\, with almost every street having its own café. Gerbeaud set itself apart from the rest with its elegant décor and the wide variety of delicious cakes it offered. We will have the opportunity to enjoy a selection of three traditional cakes\, along with coffee or tea and water in an atmosphere surrounded by silk-carpeted walls\, crystal chandeliers\, and gilded tables\, exuding a style that drew people from the highest social echelons of society. SUMMARY:Geological Institute
DESCRIPTION:In the late 19th century\, the Hungarian Geological Society decided to build a new structure to house their activities. However\, they wanted an architect who could create a unique Hungarian style of architecture\, reflecting the nationalist spirit of the age. To fulfill their needs\, they hired Ödön Lechner\, the father of the Hungarian art nouveau movement known as Szecesszió. Lechner’s style was characterized by the use of brightly colored ceramics\, eastern design details\, organic motifs\, and Hungarian folk art elements\, all of which he incorporated into the design of the building commissioned by the society (now the Hungarian Geological Institute).  \n\n\n\nThe Institute’s building is a perfect example of the Szecesszió movement and is most notable for its turquoise and blue tiled Zsolnay roof\, which represents the ancient Tethys Ocean. Other details of the building similarly merge architectural and geological themes\, such as cave-like mosaics on the flooring at the entrance and details of fossils decorating the exterior. Engraved windows throughout the museum feature typical Hungarian flower motifs\, and the entire building is crowned with a statue of human figures holding up a globe.  The building still serves as the home of the Hungarian Geological Institute\, the country’s oldest scientific research institute. It also houses the Geological Museum of Budapest\, which boasts the largest geological collection in the country\, including 23 thematic collections with over 180\,000 inventoried fossils\, minerals\, rocks\, and photos. \n\n\n\nFor more details see the NAWA members Announcements or contact nawamembership@gmail.com

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a charity fundraiser at one of our member’s place\, where we’ll prepare Transylvanian cabbage rolls and enjoy a delicious lunch. \n\n\n\nThe proceeds from the event will go towards providing candies and smiles to the patients of a local hospital as well as the staff working at the institutions we support. The remaining amount will be utilized to buy fruit for the residents of the senior homes. Participants will receive tea\, coffee\, and refreshments upon arrival and will get hands-on experience in making sarmale. The fruit of their labor will be packaged and taken home to be cooked for their families.
